Mile Twelve

It is a commitment to avoid what is easy and predictable that fuels Mile Twelve’s continued march forward. The winners of IBMA’s 2017 Momentum award are now nominated for 2018 Emerging Artist of the year, and they show no signs of slowing. Their debut full-length album Onwards, produced by Stephen Mougin, was met with critical acclaim and earned the band time at the top of the bluegrass charts as well as an IBMA nomination for 2018 Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year. John Lawless of Bluegrass Today says, “The Boston-based group has been making noise in bluegrass with their virtuosic approach to the music, clever songwriting and arrangements, a nose-to-the-grindstone attitude, and a youthful energy that appeals to all age groups. All of that shows on their new release, Onwards.”

They’ll be heading into the studio at the end of 2018 to record their sophomore project with Nashville-based Ben Surratt at the board and guitar virtuoso Bryan Sutton producing. Paul Schiminger, President of The IBMA says, “What I and so many others love about Mile Twelve is their musicianship, material, and energy.  Their sound is fresh and innovative, yet rooted in a solid foundation of bluegrass. They move easily among traditional bluegrass classics, terrific original material, and interpretations of pop music classics, while knocking you over with their strong instrumentals and harmonies.” Tim O’Brien calls them “a group to watch in the coming decade.”

Foghorn Stringband

American roots music is a diverse and never-ending well of inspiration, and Foghorn Stringband continually and obsessively draws from old-time, bluegrass, classic country, and Cajun music traditions in an ongoing quest to present a broad span of American historical music with an unparalleled youthful energy, joy, and virtuosity. To the band, this music is as relevant today as it was at its birth a century ago. They see themselves not only as cultural revivalists, but also as historians and fans of this music. Their performances and recordings are a joyful celebration of music from a bygone era that still holds the power to delight audiences worldwide.

With a reputation for energetic live shows, impeccable musicianship and an uncanny ability to convert anyone within earshot into a lifelong fan, The Slocans have been winning over audiences from Merlefest to RockyGrass and everywhere in between.

Joe Wilmhoff (bass) and Don Share (guitar) provide a rhythm section and groove that will grab your attention. Story House

Story House is made up of five musicians who have been active in the Pacific Northwest bluegrass scene for many years. The members of Story House are all accomplished musicians blending their talents to create their unique approach to bluegrass music. Though all five members of the band sing, Jake & Maiken’s arresting duet singing is the cornerstone of the band’s vocal sound. Story House is a modern bluegrass band steeped in the old tones. The band features mainly original songs and tunes, mixed with covers of great songs both old and new. Robbie Bennett, the newest member, is a powerful fiddle player who as a young man studied with the legendary Kenny Baker and played with Ralph Stanley.

Lonesome Town Painters

lonesometownpainters.com

The Lonesome Town Painters are Vancouver’s traditional bluegrass standard-bearers. Having gravitated toward each other in late-night local jam sessions, and by way of their mutual adoration for the Stanley Brothers, these fellows harken back to the raw and ragged edge of the genre. Their high-lonesome harmony singing and melodic instrumentation pay homage to bluegrass pioneers, while their spirited performances kick the dust off of golden-era favourites, and bristle with emotional honesty. Playing an eclectic mix of songs about love and loss, the odd original, as well as gospel, The Lonesome Town Painters would be equally at home in the barroom on Saturday night and the next morning’s church service, comfortable treading that fine line between perdition and salvation.

Magnolia Buckskin
